Hanalei Point off the Kuhio Highway suits conservative surfers with the best right on Kauai. Beginners do okay here up in surf up to about six feet, but when the big barrels roll in, they should head in.
A bit more left wing? Check out Longhouse's long left but watch for wipeouts on the shallow and sometimes sharp reef. Acid Drop is the other risky, but wonderful tube reef run here. Those not given to extremes, or with adult responsibilities should consider Center that, logically enough, separates the two other rides.
Lessons from Margo Oberg's Surfing School (808-742-1750) at the Kiahuna Resort offer up 90 minutes with the seven-time world champion. This is a best buy at $45 for more experienced surfers who want to look good on Hanalei Bay. Boards rent by the hour, half-day or day. A lesson with a board for the rest of the day costs $50 or so from most of the surf shops. The Hanalei Surf Company (808-826-9000) can rent boards, belly boards, wind surfers -- if you have skills -- or supply lessons for anything that floats or sinks.
