More than a nature park and more than just an adventure park, Waimea Falls Park combines the finest of nature and adventure in a setting that celebrates Hawaiian culture. The entrance to Waimea Valley Park is set just off the main road adjacent to the famous surf break at Waimea Bay.
The park encompasses more than 1,800 acres of a private valley. The park's main focus is to allow the visitor to examine the lifestyle of ancient Hawaiians, as they existed in an "ahupuaa" or village. The park has many examples of ancient Hawaiian life, but the most interesting is the archeological site that proves that ancient Hawaiians actually inhabited the land in and around the valley.
The main attraction of the park is the cliff diving exhibition that takes place from the pool at the base of the falls. The presentation is thrilling, and the accompanying music makes it quite enjoyable.
There is a diverse menu of activities that will make a visit here both enjoyable and entertaining. For those who want to relish the natural beauty of the valley, nature walks and cultural demonstrations are the perfect activity. Waimea also has 36 gardens featuring more than 6,000 species of some of the most rare and most beautiful plant life in the world. A hands-on demonstration of lei making is especially interesting. These flower garlands have cultural and spiritual significance to the Hawaiian people.
For the active visitor, there are all-terrain vehicle trail rides. These rides are often muddy, but the experience of blazing through a tropical rainforest will stay with you for a long time. Kayaking is also available, with the cool, mountain-fed waters and lush scenery of the Waimea River as the setting.
Waimea Valley Park is a full day of enjoyment, whether you are bounding recklessly along a mountain trail or sitting beneath a shady tree, this place will become a part of your most memorable Hawaiian experiences.
The park is about a 35-mile drive from the heart of Waikiki. Follow the H-1 west, and then head toward the North Shore via the H-2 freeway. Continue past Waihiawa and Haleiwa. The entrance to the park is on the right, just across from the entrance to Waimea Bay Beach Park - about four and a half miles from Haleiwa. By city bus from Waikiki, take bus #8 or #20 on Kuhio Ave to the Ala Moana Shopping Center Catch bus #52 Wahiawa Circle Island. Have the driver announce the Waimea Bay beach stop.
