9am to 5pm Thanksgiving 9am to 3pm New Years Day 11am to 5pm
The Waikiki Aquarium first opened in 1904 as a part of the Honolulu Rapid Transit Authority's efforts to increase traffic along their newly opened Waikiki Trolley line and to serve as a showplace for the fine fish that were a part of the island's waters. The old tram stop still stands near the entrance to the Aquarium, and this small attraction has grown to become a favorite to many visitors from across the world.

The third oldest Aquarium in the United States, the Waikiki Aquarium is relatively small when compared to some of the newer aquatic attractions. However, the Waikiki Aquarium makes up in quality what it lacks in size. Once inside the entrance, there are several small galleries that will capture your interest in the undersea world.

You'll find fine specimens like the chambered Nautilus and the giant clam in their native marine habitats. The Mahi hatchery and the coral farm are very interesting and demonstrate what marine research is accomplishing today. Just outside are several pools that encompass 'The Edge of the Reef' exhibit. These are reproductions of several types of Hawaiian shoreline habitats. The colorful fish and sea urchins are simply beautiful.

The highlight of any Aquarium visit is the Monk Seal tank. This is not your run of the mill exhibit. These are endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals. Monk seals are protected my law and cannot be approached in the wild. They are also known to be quite aggressive and spend much of their time alone. This exhibit is the only place in the entire world where you can observe monk seals up close.

The Waikiki Aquarium is located between the Natatorium and Queen's Beach, within easy walking distance of most hotels in Waikiki. If you prefer to take the city bus, board the #8, #9, #20, #47 or #58 Diamond Head bound along Kuhio Avenue to the Waikiki Shell. The entrance to the Aquarium will be just across the park along the beach. By car, take Kalakaua Avenue to Monserrat. Metered parking is along the perimeter of the Kapiolani Park or free parking is available in the Waikiki Shell parking lot.
