Puako Petroglyph Archeological District
Hours: Always open
Inside
Tips:
At the nearby Mauna Lani Resort on Puaka Road you can pick up a very informative historical information brochure, “A View Into the Past”, detailing the petroglyphs as well as giving a useful map of the area.
The area gets quite hot and dusty so bring sunscreen and your own water for your trek into “the bush”.
Puako Road leading to the petroglyphs is scattered with beach access roads that will allow you to explore the beach nearby. It might be a nice refresher after the hot trek inland.
You may hear of people taking rubbings (or even moldings!) of the petroglyphs, but for the sake of future preservation you shouldn’t do it yourself. It has been documented that such rubbings are contributing to the petroglyphs’ deterioration. The same goes for walking on the fragile volcanic rocks.
