Honolulu Zoo has one of the most interesting locations in the world. The 43-acre facility sits at the foot of Diamond Head, just across from the white sand shores of Waikiki. Once a marshy grassland area full of fishponds, lagoons and knolls, the zoo is now home to elephants, zebras, lions, pot bellied pigs and other exotic animals. The highlight of the zoo is the Karibuni Reserve, a 10-acre preserve where the animals from the African savannah roam free.
Originally presented to the people of Hawaii by then King Kalakaua, the zoo is still popular with both tourists and locals. In 1914, the City of Honolulu assumed administration of the zoo through the newly formed City Parks and Recreation Department.
Free concerts are held between 4:30pm to 5:30pm on Wednesday afternoons in the summer and Sunday afternoons in the winter. Held on the great lawn just inside the main entrance, these concerts are the best time to visit, since they are held in the cooler part of the day when the animals, especially the cats are ready for feeding.
The entertainment is topnotch and the discounted admission of just one dollar makes the entire experience a 'must do.' The refreshment stand serves everything from hot dogs to ice cream, but to bring your own picnic is a far better idea. The flora and fauna are beautiful and plentiful. There many open areas for picnics and lounging.

The Honolulu Zoo is easily accessible from all areas of the island by the city bus (board the #8, #19, #20, #47 or #58 ride to Monserrat Ave), or via car (from Kalakaua turn left at Monserrat Ave.) It's also an easy walk from most Waikiki hotels.
